Visiting Perimeter Center

Visiting Perimeter Center

Safety & Security

As of July 1, 2024, the Commonwealth of Virginia is implementing enhanced security procedures at Perimeter Center, the building that houses the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation's operations and meeting spaces. These changes underscore a commitment to the safety of all building users and will bring Perimeter Center security measures in line with other facilities housing state agencies.

Access points to Perimeter Center will continue to be limited to two entryways: the first-floor front entrance and the second-floor west entrance to the Commonwealth Conference Center. Please note: there will be no other authorized points of entry to Perimeter Center.

Visitors for licensing customer service should use the first-floor main entrance. If you are attending a Commonwealth Conference Center event on the second floor (e.g., board meeting, informal fact-finding conference, remedial education), use the building's west entrance.

Procedures for Entering Perimeter Center

All visitors to Perimeter Center must be screened and sign-in with security at one of the authorized entrances. Upon entering, please be aware of the following policies and procedures.

  • Visitors must be escorted at all times.
  • Elevators will require badge access at all times to operate.
  • Metal detectors and other devices will be in place at screening stations

The presence of magnetometers (walk-through device), X-ray machines for bags, and hand-held metal detector wands, will be in place for the screening of all Perimeter Center personnel and visitors. These devices will support the enforcement of Virginia’s prohibition of firearms and explosive material within buildings owned or leased by the Commonwealth of Virginia, as outlined in Code of Virginia 18.2-283.2

Prohibited items include guns, knives over three inches, razors/bladed weapons, stun guns/tasers, and tools such as screwdrivers, etc. Exceptions, defined in the code, are made for law enforcement officers and certain other professions that require they carry a gun on duty.

Contractors/tradesmen attending meetings/hearings, should leave all tools in their vehicles or will be asked to take the items back to their vehicles by security at one of the screening stations. This does not apply to approved contractor vendors performing construction at Perimeter Center.
